Even if slabs were not insulated prior to pouring, you can add a reflective insulation material and install radiant coils on top. Start in a corner of the room closest to the spot where the electrical hookups will be made. Then lay out mats across the whole floor, finishing in the same corner where you began.
That way, an electrician can use the loop to make any final connections to the power supply. Plywood and waferboard subfloors may also accept mats of radiant heating coils. Install mats on top of the existing subfloor. Since the mats must be embedded in a layer of thinset mortar to cover them completely, you may want to contact a flooring contractor first.
The contractor can determine whether the existing floor is suitable for tile and that the joists can handle the load of the tile and mortar. If you have access to the bottom of the subfloor through a crawlspace or basement, radiant heating mats offer an easy installation. Staple mats inside each joist bay -- the spaces between floor joists -- and into the underside of the subfloor.
Connect the mats in each joist bay with wire leads to create a loop to which the electrical contractor makes final connections. Direct heat toward the room by installing insulation into the joist bays. I just installed this same system in my own house. It is so easy to install. The hardest thing was just getting power to the thermostat. Make sure to put in a deep box because there are 5 wire connections and the thermostat is recessed into the box.
If I had to do over again. I might put them alternating at 1. Right now it takes a couple hours to heat up in the morning. I used self-leveling mortor with a plasticizer.
